The South Potomac Citizens' Association (SPCA) was formed from a small gathering of local citizens in 1969. Their initial concern was the construction of a new junior high school. The SPCA was incorporated as a non-profit corporation in September 1971 and has been actively representing the community ever since. The SPCA began to host monthly meetings at Indian Queen Elementary School, which was built with the association's input. SPCA held its first block party in June 1972 on a then uncompleted street, which became Camelot Way. Activities included free pony rides, games, enhancement of Fort Foote National Park, and the promotion of recreational, cultural opportunities in the South County area. To foster these efforts, in June 2001 SPCA reestablished its non-profit status 501 (C) (3) as a separate organization with an interlocked board of directors. The tradition continues with the Community Day Free Annual Picnic, now held in Fort Foote National Park in August of each year. The SPCA today represents approximately 2,200+ households in the area surrounded by Oxon Hill Road, Fort Foote Road, and the Potomac River. SPCA has protected the interests of the community by monitoring new construction, transportation issues, zoning commercial development, crime, airport noise, etc. Currently, the SPCA is actively involved in the widening of Oxon Hill Road, securing funding for the preservation and enhancement of Fort Foote National Park, the promotion of recreational and cultural opportunities in the South Country area and preserving the historical heritage of Prince George's County. In that role, the organization operates as the Greater Fort Foote Area Recreational, Cultural & Historical Council, Inc., a 501 (C) (3) corporation. SPCA's Bi-monthly community meetings with a guest speaker or other activity are held every second Monday from 7:30 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. at Indian Queen Elementary School on Fort Foote Road. Board meetings are the second Tuesday of every month at the above-mentioned time, excluding July and August. These meetings rotate to each board member's home. All board meetings are opened to the community with advanced notice due to space limitations. SPCA publishes a newsletter, the South Potomac Muse, six months a year. |
